Amotech (KOSDAQ:052710) Shareholders Have Enjoyed A 69% Share Price Gain
Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. And while active stock picking involves risks (and requires diversification) it can also provide excess returns. For example, long term Amotech Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:052710) shareholders have enjoyed a 69% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 33% (not including dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven't been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 20%.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Amotech's earnings per share are down 39% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
It is not great to see that revenue has dropped by 7.4% per year over five years. It certainly surprises us that the share price is up, but perhaps a closer examination of the data will yield answers.

A Different Perspective
Amotech shareholders gained a total return of 20% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 11% over half a decade It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Amotech you should know about.
