Can Kortek (KOSDAQ:052330) Turn Things Around?

When we're researching a company, it's sometimes hard to find the warning signs, but there are some financial metrics that can help spot trouble early. More often than not, we'll see a declining return on capital employed (ROCE) and a declining amount of capital employed. This indicates to us that the business is not only shrinking the size of its net assets, but its returns are falling as well. Having said that, after a brief look, Kortek (KOSDAQ:052330) we aren't filled with optimism, but let's investigate further.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Kortek, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.025 = ₩7.9b ÷ (₩329b - ₩17b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).

So, Kortek has an ROCE of 2.5%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Tech industry average of 6.5%.

While the past is not representative of the future, it can be helpful to know how a company has performed historically, which is why we have this chart above. What Does the ROCE Trend For Kortek Tell Us?

In terms of Kortek's historical ROCE movements, the trend doesn't inspire confidence. To be more specific, the ROCE was 12% one year ago, but since then it has dropped noticeably. On top of that, it's worth noting that the amount of capital employed within the business has remained relatively steady. Companies that exhibit these attributes tend to not be shrinking, but they can be mature and facing pressure on their margins from competition. If these trends continue, we wouldn't expect Kortek to turn into a multi-bagger.

What We Can Learn From Kortek's ROCE

All in all, the lower returns from the same amount of capital employed aren't exactly signs of a compounding machine. It should come as no surprise then that the stock has fallen 10% over the last five years, so it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. Unless there is a shift to a more positive trajectory in these metrics, we would look elsewhere.
