PC Direct, Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:051380) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 26%
PC Direct, Inc. (KOSDAQ:051380) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 29% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, it would still be understandable if you think PC Direct is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.1x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Electronic industry have P/S ratios above 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does PC Direct's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
The recent revenue growth at PC Direct would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance might fall short of industry figures in the near future, leading to a reduced P/S. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders may have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, PC Direct would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 7.1% last year. Ultimately though, it couldn't turn around the poor performance of the prior period, with revenue shrinking 9.8% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 9.5% shows it's an unpleasant look.
In light of this, it's understandable that PC Direct's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What We Can Learn From PC Direct's P/S?
Despite PC Direct's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
It's no surprise that PC Direct maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
