Should You Be Impressed By TOVISLtd's (KOSDAQ:051360) Returns on Capital?
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. In light of that, when we looked at TOVISLtd (KOSDAQ:051360) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for TOVISLtd:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.07 = ₩14b ÷ (₩280b - ₩87b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2020).
So, TOVISLtd has an ROCE of 7.0%. Even though it's in line with the industry average of 6.6%, it's still a low return by itself.

What Does the ROCE Trend For TOVISLtd Tell Us?
In terms of TOVISLtd's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 41% over the last five years. And considering revenue has dropped while employing more capital, we'd be cautious. If this were to continue, you might be looking at a company that is trying to reinvest for growth but is actually losing market share since sales haven't increased.
The Bottom Line On TOVISLtd's ROCE
In summary, we're somewhat concerned by TOVISLtd's diminishing returns on increasing amounts of capital. Despite the concerning underlying trends, the stock has actually gained 3.6% over the last five years, so it might be that the investors are expecting the trends to reverse. Either way, we aren't huge fans of the current trends and so with that we think you might find better investments elsewhere.
