Taihan Fiber Optics (KOSDAQ:010170) adds ₩18b to market cap in the past 7 days, though investors from five years ago are still down 61%
It's nice to see the Taihan Fiber Optics Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:010170) share price up 28% in a week. But that is little comfort to those holding over the last half decade, sitting on a big loss. The share price has failed to impress anyone , down a sizable 66% during that time. So we're hesitant to put much weight behind the short term increase. However, in the best case scenario (far from fait accompli), this improved performance might be sustained.
While the last five years has been tough for Taihan Fiber Optics shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

Given that Taihan Fiber Optics didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
Over five years, Taihan Fiber Optics grew its revenue at 4.6% per year. That's far from impressive given all the money it is losing. This lacklustre growth has no doubt fueled the loss of 11% per year, in that time. We want to see an acceleration of revenue growth (or profits) before showing much interest in this one. When a stock falls hard like this, some investors like to add the company to a watchlist (in case the business recovers, longer term).

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Taihan Fiber Optics' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Taihan Fiber Optics hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of -61% exceeds its share price return of -66%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.
A Different Perspective
Although it hurts that Taihan Fiber Optics returned a loss of 4.5% in the last twelve months, the broader market was actually worse, returning a loss of 5.6%. What is more upsetting is the 10% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. This sort of share price action isn't particularly encouraging, but at least the losses are slowing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
