Mirae Corporation (KRX:025560) May Have Run Too Fast Too Soon With Recent 28% Price Plummet

To the annoyance of some shareholders, Mirae Corporation (KRX:025560) shares are down a considerable 28% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 69% loss during that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Mirae's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.3x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Korea's Semiconductor industry is similar at about 1x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Mirae Has Been Performing

For instance, Mirae's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Mirae's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Mirae's Revenue Growth Trending?

Mirae's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 38% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 63% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 47% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that Mirae's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

What Does Mirae's P/S Mean For Investors?

With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for Mirae looks to be in line with the rest of the Semiconductor industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We find it unexpected that Mirae trades at a P/S ratio that is comparable to the rest of the industry, despite experiencing declining revenues during the medium-term, while the industry as a whole is expected to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 4 warning signs for Mirae (2 are potentially serious!) that you need to be mindful of.
