Advanced Process Systems Corporation (KOSDAQ:265520) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 27% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough

The Advanced Process Systems Corporation (KOSDAQ:265520) share price has softened a substantial 27% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Looking back over the past twelve months the stock has been a solid performer regardless, with a gain of 19%.

Since its price has dipped substantially, Advanced Process Systems may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.4x, since almost half of all companies in Korea have P/E ratios greater than 13x and even P/E's higher than 27x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, Advanced Process Systems has been very sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Advanced Process Systems' Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Advanced Process Systems' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 27%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 86% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 28% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 33% growth , that's a disappointing outcome.

In light of this, it's understandable that Advanced Process Systems' P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From Advanced Process Systems' P/E?

Shares in Advanced Process Systems have plummeted and its P/E is now low enough to touch the ground. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Advanced Process Systems' analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
