There's Reason For Concern Over ALT Co., Ltd's (KOSDAQ:172670) Massive 26% Price Jump

The ALT Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:172670) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 26%. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.

Following the firm bounce in price, when almost half of the companies in Korea's Semiconductor industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.6x, you may consider ALT as a stock probably not worth researching with its 2.2x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does ALT's Recent Performance Look Like?

For example, consider that ALT's financial performance has been pretty ordinary lately as revenue growth is non-existent. One possibility is that the P/S is high because investors think the benign revenue growth will improve to outperform the broader industry in the near future. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For ALT?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as ALT's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. The longer-term trend has been no better as the company has no revenue growth to show for over the last three years either. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has definitely eluded the company recently.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 28% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that ALT's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From ALT's P/S?

ALT shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of ALT revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't detracting from the P/S as much as we though, given they look worse than current industry expectations. When we observe slower-than-industry revenue growth alongside a high P/S ratio, we assume there to be a significant risk of the share price decreasing, which would result in a lower P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
