TSE Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:131290) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 28%
TSE Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:131290) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 28% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking further back, the 11% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 16x, you may still consider TSE as an attractive investment with its 12x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, TSE has been doing quite well of late. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company's earnings are going to fall away like everyone else's soon. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as TSE's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 190%. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 25% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 8.6% per year as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 18% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that TSE's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Key Takeaway
TSE's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that TSE maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
