Increasing losses over three years doesn't faze WINPAC (KOSDAQ:097800) investors as stock hikes 18% this past week
This week we saw the WINPAC Inc. (KOSDAQ:097800) share price climb by 18%. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Regrettably, the share price slid 66% in that period. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. The rise has some hopeful, but turnarounds are often precarious.
While the stock has risen 18% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

Because WINPAC made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
In the last three years WINPAC saw its revenue shrink by 9.8% per year. That is not a good result. The share price decline of 18% compound, over three years, is understandable given the company doesn't have profits to boast of, and revenue is moving in the wrong direction. Having said that, if growth is coming in the future, now may be the low ebb for the company. We'd be pretty wary of this one until it makes a profit, because we don't specialize in finding turnaround situations.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between WINPAC's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. We note that WINPAC's TSR, at -56% is higher than its share price return of -66%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that WINPAC shareholders are down 43% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 4.0%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 9% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 5 warning signs for WINPAC (3 shouldn't be ignored) that you should be aware of.
