Improved Revenues Required Before Signetics Corporation (KOSDAQ:033170) Stock's 57% Jump Looks Justified
Signetics Corporation (KOSDAQ:033170) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 57% after a shaky period beforehand. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 9.1% over the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, Signetics may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x, since almost half of all companies in the Semiconductor industry in Korea have P/S ratios greater than 1.7x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Signetics Performed Recently?
For instance, Signetics' receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. Those who are bullish on Signetics will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Signetics would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 26%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 65% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 28% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this information, we are not surprised that Signetics is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
What Does Signetics' P/S Mean For Investors?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Signetics' P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Signetics revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
