Strong week for REYON Pharmaceutical (KRX:102460) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of five-year loss
REYON Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (KRX:102460) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 13% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. You would have done a lot better buying an index fund, since the stock has dropped 46% in that half decade.
While the stock has risen 13% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
In the last half decade REYON Pharmaceutical saw its share price fall as its EPS declined below zero. Since the company has fallen to a loss making position, it's hard to compare the change in EPS with the share price change. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

A Different Perspective
Investors in REYON Pharmaceutical had a tough year, with a total loss of 14% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 59%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 8% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
