GC Biopharma Corp.'s (KRX:006280) Shares Bounce 26% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
GC Biopharma Corp. (KRX:006280) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 26% after a shaky period beforehand. While recent buyers may be laughing, long-term holders might not be as pleased since the recent gain only brings the stock back to where it started a year ago.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, GC Biopharma may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in Korea have P/S ratios greater than 15.8x and even P/S higher than 108x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How GC Biopharma Has Been Performing
Recent times haven't been great for GC Biopharma as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as GC Biopharma's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 18%. As a result, it also grew revenue by 14% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 4.5% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 51% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we can see why GC Biopharma is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From GC Biopharma's P/S?
Even after such a strong price move, GC Biopharma's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that GC Biopharma maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
