We're Not Very Worried About Curiox Biosystems' (KOSDAQ:445680) Cash Burn Rate
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
So, the natural question for Curiox Biosystems (KOSDAQ:445680) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

How Long Is Curiox Biosystems' Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. In March 2024, Curiox Biosystems had ₩15b in cash, and was debt-free. Importantly, its cash burn was ₩8.1b over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of approximately 23 months from March 2024. That's not too bad, but it's fair to say the end of the cash runway is in sight, unless cash burn reduces drastically. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Well Is Curiox Biosystems Growing?
It was fairly positive to see that Curiox Biosystems reduced its cash burn by 22% during the last year. Unfortunately, however, operating revenue declined by 28% during the period. Considering both these factors, we're not particularly excited by its growth profile. Of course, we've only taken a quick look at the stock's growth metrics, here. You can take a look at how Curiox Biosystems has developed its business over time by checking this visualization of its revenue and earnings history.
How Easily Can Curiox Biosystems Raise Cash?
Curiox Biosystems seems to be in a fairly good position, in terms of cash burn, but we still think it's worthwhile considering how easily it could raise more money if it wanted to. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Curiox Biosystems' cash burn of ₩8.1b is about 2.0% of its ₩410b market capitalisation. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.
How Risky Is Curiox Biosystems' Cash Burn Situation?
On this analysis of Curiox Biosystems' cash burn, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap was reassuring, while its falling revenue has us a bit worried. Based on the factors mentioned in this article, we think its cash burn situation warrants some attention from shareholders, but we don't think they should be worried. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 3 warning signs for Curiox Biosystems (of which 2 are concerning!) you should know about.
