YG Plus, Inc.'s (KRX:037270) Stock Has Seen Strong Momentum: Does That Call For Deeper Study Of Its Financial Prospects?
YG Plus (KRX:037270) has had a great run on the share market with its stock up by a significant 50% over the last month. Given that stock prices are usually aligned with a company's financial performance in the long-term, we decided to study its financial indicators more closely to see if they had a hand to play in the recent price move. Specifically, we decided to study YG Plus' ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
The formula for ROE is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for YG Plus is:
4.4% = ₩7.4b ÷ ₩169b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year. So, this means that for every ₩1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of ₩0.04.
Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
YG Plus' Earnings Growth And 4.4% ROE
As you can see, YG Plus' ROE looks pretty weak. Not just that, even compared to the industry average of 6.1%, the company's ROE is entirely unremarkable. Despite this, surprisingly, YG Plus saw an exceptional 27% net income growth over the past five years. We reckon that there could be other factors at play here. Such as - high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.
As a next step, we compared YG Plus' net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 4.9%.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Is YG Plus Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
Given that YG Plus doesn't pay any regular dividends to its shareholders, we infer that the company has been reinvesting all of its profits to grow its business.
Conclusion
On the whole, we do feel that YG Plus has some positive attributes. Despite its low rate of return, the fact that the company reinvests a very high portion of its profits into its business, no doubt contributed to its high earnings growth. While we won't completely dismiss the company, what we would do, is try to ascertain how risky the business is to make a more informed decision around the company.
