SKC Co., Ltd.'s (KRX:011790) 28% Cheaper Price Remains In Tune With Revenues

To the annoyance of some shareholders, SKC Co., Ltd. (KRX:011790) shares are down a considerable 28% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 35% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, you could still be forgiven for thinking SKC is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.8x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Chemicals industry have P/S ratios below 0.6x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How SKC Has Been Performing

Recent times have been advantageous for SKC as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as SKC's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 15%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 24% drop in revenue in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the twelve analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 15% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 10% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why SKC's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

There's still some elevation in SKC's P/S, even if the same can't be said for its share price recently. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of SKC's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
