The Duksung (KRX:004830) Share Price Is Up 150% And Shareholders Are Boasting About It
When you buy shares in a company, there is always a risk that the price drops to zero. On the other hand, if you find a high quality business to buy (at the right price) you can more than double your money! Take, for example Duksung Co., Ltd. (KRX:004830). Its share price is already up an impressive 150% in the last twelve months. It's also good to see the share price up 59% over the last quarter. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 30% in the last three months. And shareholders have also done well over the long term, with an increase of 87% in the last three years.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last year Duksung grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit.
When a company has just transitioned to profitability, earnings per share growth is not always the best way to look at the share price action.
We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 0.3% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. We think that the revenue growth of 38% could have some investors interested. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth.

A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Duksung shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 150% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 3% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
