SUN&L Co., Ltd. (KRX:002820) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 38% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 32% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that SUN&L's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Forestry industry in Korea, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has SUN&L Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at SUN&L over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is SUN&L's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, SUN&L would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 15% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 1.1% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 14% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this information, we find it concerning that SUN&L is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Bottom Line On SUN&L's P/S

Its shares have lifted substantially and now SUN&L's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We find it unexpected that SUN&L trades at a P/S ratio that is comparable to the rest of the industry, despite experiencing declining revenues during the medium-term, while the industry as a whole is expected to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
