Kumyang Co., Ltd.'s (KRX:001570) 38% Dip Still Leaving Some Shareholders Feeling Restless Over Its P/SRatio
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Kumyang Co., Ltd. (KRX:001570) shares are down a considerable 38% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 72% loss during that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, when almost half of the companies in Korea's Chemicals industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.6x, you may still consider Kumyang as a stock not worth researching with its 10.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Has Kumyang Performed Recently?
For instance, Kumyang's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Kumyang's earnings, revenue and cash flow.Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Kumyang's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 2.5% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 22% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 24% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Kumyang's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Kumyang's shares may have suffered, but its P/S remains high. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Kumyang currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
