Soulbrain (KOSDAQ:357780) Might Be Having Difficulty Using Its Capital Effectively
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Although, when we looked at Soulbrain (KOSDAQ:357780), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Soulbrain, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = ₩157b ÷ (₩1.1t - ₩99b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Thus, Soulbrain has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Chemicals industry average of 7.4% it's much better.

In the above chart we have measured Soulbrain's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you'd like, you can check out the forecasts from the analysts covering Soulbrain for free.
The Trend Of ROCE
In terms of Soulbrain's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 31% over the last three years. Meanwhile, the business is utilizing more capital but this hasn't moved the needle much in terms of sales in the past 12 months, so this could reflect longer term investments. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.
On a related note, Soulbrain has decreased its current liabilities to 8.8% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money.
The Bottom Line
To conclude, we've found that Soulbrain is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. Since the stock has declined 12% over the last three years, investors may not be too optimistic on this trend improving either. In any case, the stock doesn't have these traits of a multi-bagger discussed above, so if that's what you're looking for, we think you'd have more luck elsewhere.
While Soulbrain doesn't shine too bright in this respect, it's still worth seeing if the company is trading at attractive prices. You can find that out with our FREE intrinsic value estimation for A357780 on our platform.
