Daeyu Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:290380) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 12% in the last month. Looking on the brighter side, the stock is actually up over twelve months. In that time, it is up 48%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 56%.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over the last twelve months, Daeyu actually shrank its EPS by 22%.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We think that the revenue growth of 12% could have some investors interested. Many businesses do go through a phase where they have to forgo some profits to drive business development, and sometimes its for the best.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered Daeyu's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Daeyu hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 51% exceeds its share price return of 48%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.

A Different Perspective

Daeyu shareholders have gained 51% over twelve months, which isn't far from the market return of 56%. That's a lot better than the more recent three month gain of 7.0%, implying that share price has plateaued recently. It seems likely the market is waiting on fundamental developments with the business before pushing the share price higher (or lower). While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
