Woosung's (KRX:006980) Solid Earnings May Rest On Weak Foundations

The recent earnings posted by Woosung Co., Ltd. (KRX:006980) were solid, but the stock didn't move as much as we expected. However the statutory profit number doesn't tell the whole story, and we have found some factors which might be of concern to shareholders.

A Closer Look At Woosung's Earnings

As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.

That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".

Over the twelve months to September 2025, Woosung recorded an accrual ratio of -0.14. That indicates that its free cash flow was a fair bit more than its statutory profit. In fact, it had free cash flow of ₩67b in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of ₩26.1b. Given that Woosung had negative free cash flow in the prior corresponding period, the trailing twelve month resul of ₩67b would seem to be a step in the right direction. Having said that, there is more to the story. The accrual ratio is reflecting the impact of unusual items on statutory profit, at least in part.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit

Surprisingly, given Woosung's accrual ratio implied strong cash conversion, its paper profit was actually boosted by ₩19b in unusual items. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. We can see that Woosung's positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to September 2025. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On Woosung's Profit Performance

In conclusion, Woosung's accrual ratio suggests its statutory earnings are of good quality, but on the other hand the profits were boosted by unusual items. Based on these factors, we think it's very unlikely that Woosung's statutory profits make it seem much weaker than it is.
