Slammed 28% Daejoo Inc. (KOSDAQ:003310) Screens Well Here But There Might Be A Catch
Daejoo Inc. (KOSDAQ:003310) shares have retraced a considerable 28% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Longer-term, the stock has been solid despite a difficult 30 days, gaining 15% in the last year.
Even after such a large drop in price, Daejoo's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 8.3x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 13x and even P/E's above 26x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
For instance, Daejoo's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Daejoo would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 18%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 117% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 21% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
With this information, we find it odd that Daejoo is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Daejoo's P/E
Daejoo's recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Daejoo currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
