UbionLtd (KOSDAQ:084440) Is Making Moderate Use Of Debt
Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that Ubion Co.Ltd. (KOSDAQ:084440) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is UbionLtd's Debt?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that at September 2024 UbionLtd had debt of ₩3.77b, up from none in one year. On the flip side, it has ₩3.14b in cash leading to net debt of about ₩627.9m.
How Strong Is UbionLtd's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that UbionLtd had liabilities of ₩16.3b due within a year, and liabilities of ₩510.0m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of ₩3.14b and ₩2.70b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total ₩10.9b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
UbionLtd has a market capitalization of ₩23.3b, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since UbionLtd will need earnings to service that debt. So when considering debt, it's definitely worth looking at the earnings trend. Click here for an interactive snapshot.
In the last year UbionLtd wasn't profitable at an EBIT level, but managed to grow its revenue by 4.6%, to ₩33b. That rate of growth is a bit slow for our taste, but it takes all types to make a world.
Caveat Emptor
Importantly, UbionLtd had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last year. Indeed, it lost ₩2.0b at the EBIT level. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through ₩2.4b of cash over the last year. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for UbionLtd (2 can't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
