We Think You Can Look Beyond YBM Net's (KOSDAQ:057030) Lackluster Earnings
YBM Net, Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:057030) earnings announcement last week didn't impress shareholders. While the headline numbers were soft, we believe that investors might be missing some encouraging factors.
Zooming In On YBM Net's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Over the twelve months to March 2025, YBM Net recorded an accrual ratio of -0.19. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. In fact, it had free cash flow of ₩7.0b in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of ₩2.99b. YBM Net shareholders are no doubt pleased that free cash flow improved over the last twelve months.

Our Take On YBM Net's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, YBM Net's accrual ratio indicates strong conversion of profit to free cash flow, which is a positive for the company. Because of this, we think YBM Net's underlying earnings potential is as good as, or possibly even better, than the statutory profit makes it seem! And on top of that, its earnings per share have grown at 29% per year over the last three years. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved. In terms of investment risks, we've identified 4 warning signs with YBM Net, and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of YBM Net's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae.
