Chonbang Co., Ltd. (KRX:000950) Shares May Have Slumped 26% But Getting In Cheap Is Still Unlikely
Chonbang Co., Ltd. (KRX:000950) shares have retraced a considerable 26% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 75%, which is great even in a bull market.
Although its price has dipped substantially, there still wouldn't be many who think Chonbang's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Korea's Luxury industry is similar at about 0.5x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has Chonbang Performed Recently?
For instance, Chonbang's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Chonbang's to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 40%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 60% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 5.2% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Chonbang's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
What Does Chonbang's P/S Mean For Investors?
Following Chonbang's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
The fact that Chonbang currently trades at a P/S on par with the rest of the industry is surprising to us since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term, all while the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
