Here's What To Make Of Barrel's (KOSDAQ:267790) Decelerating Rates Of Return
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. In light of that, when we looked at Barrel (KOSDAQ:267790) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Barrel, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.17 = ₩9.1b ÷ (₩72b - ₩20b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
So, Barrel has an ROCE of 17%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Luxury industry average of 7.3% it's much better.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Barrel Tell Us?
Things have been pretty stable at Barrel, with its capital employed and returns on that capital staying somewhat the same for the last five years. This tells us the company isn't reinvesting in itself, so it's plausible that it's past the growth phase. So unless we see a substantial change at Barrel in terms of ROCE and additional investments being made, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger.
On another note, while the change in ROCE trend might not scream for attention, it's interesting that the current liabilities have actually gone up over the last five years. This is intriguing because if current liabilities hadn't increased to 27% of total assets, this reported ROCE would probably be less than17% because total capital employed would be higher.The 17% ROCE could be even lower if current liabilities weren't 27% of total assets, because the the formula would show a larger base of total capital employed. So while current liabilities isn't high right now, keep an eye out in case it increases further, because this can introduce some elements of risk.
In Conclusion...
In summary, Barrel isn't compounding its earnings but is generating stable returns on the same amount of capital employed. Since the stock has declined 64% over the last five years, investors may not be too optimistic on this trend improving either. Therefore based on the analysis done in this article, we don't think Barrel has the makings of a multi-bagger.
