NICE Total Cash Management's(KOSDAQ:063570) Share Price Is Down 41% Over The Past Three Years.
As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But the risk of stock picking is that you will likely buy under-performing companies. We regret to report that long term NICE Total Cash Management Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:063570) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 41% in three years, versus a market return of about 22%. The good news is that the stock is up 3.5% in the last week.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the three years that the share price fell, NICE Total Cash Management's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 50% each year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 16% compound annual share price fall. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines. With a P/E ratio of 93.30, it's fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, NICE Total Cash Management's TSR for the last 3 years was -39%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 37% in the last year, NICE Total Cash Management shareholders lost 6.2% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 0.3%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with NICE Total Cash Management (at least 1 which is a bit unpleasant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
