HD-Hyundai Marine Engine's (KRX:071970) Solid Earnings Are Supported By Other Strong Factors
HD-Hyundai Marine Engine Co., Ltd. (KRX:071970) just reported healthy earnings but the stock price didn't move much. We think that investors have missed some encouraging factors underlying the profit figures.
A Closer Look At HD-Hyundai Marine Engine's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
For the year to September 2025, HD-Hyundai Marine Engine had an accrual ratio of -0.15. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. In fact, it had free cash flow of ₩131b in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of ₩103.2b. HD-Hyundai Marine Engine shareholders are no doubt pleased that free cash flow improved over the last twelve months. However, we can see that a recent tax benefit, along with unusual items, have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore its accrual ratio.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
HD-Hyundai Marine Engine's profit was reduced by unusual items worth ₩7.2b in the last twelve months, and this helped it produce high cash conversion, as reflected by its unusual items. In a scenario where those unusual items included non-cash charges, we'd expect to see a strong accrual ratio, which is exactly what has happened in this case. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And that's hardly a surprise given these line items are considered unusual. Assuming those unusual expenses don't come up again, we'd therefore expect HD-Hyundai Marine Engine to produce a higher profit next year, all else being equal.
An Unusual Tax Situation
In addition to the notable accrual ratio, we can see that HD-Hyundai Marine Engine received a tax benefit of ₩46b. This is of course a bit out of the ordinary, given it is more common for companies to be paying tax than receiving tax benefits! We're sure the company was pleased with its tax benefit. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal.
Our Take On HD-Hyundai Marine Engine's Profit Performance
Summing up, HD-Hyundai Marine Engine's accrual ratio and its unusual items suggest that its statutory earnings were temporarily depressed, while its tax benefit is having the opposite effect. Considering all the aforementioned, we'd venture that HD-Hyundai Marine Engine's profit result is a pretty good guide to its true profitability, albeit a bit on the conservative side. Given that we think the earnings are a decent guide to the business, it might be worth looking at its share price. HD-Hyundai Marine Engine is growing its earnings, so it wouldn't be surprising if it had an above-average P/E ratio. You can find out by clicking here.
