HD Hyundai Infracore Co., Ltd. (KRX:042670) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 10% in the last month.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

HD Hyundai Infracore became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.

We don't think that the 1.4% is big factor in the share price, since it's quite small, as dividends go. It could be that the revenue decline of 9.7% per year is viewed as evidence that HD Hyundai Infracore is shrinking. This has probably encouraged some shareholders to sell down the stock.

It is of course excellent to see how HD Hyundai Infracore has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on how its financial position has changed over time.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of HD Hyundai Infracore, it has a TSR of 202% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that HD Hyundai Infracore has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 5.2% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. However, that falls short of the 25% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with HD Hyundai Infracore , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
