Reflecting on Daelim B&CoLtd's (KRX:005750) Share Price Returns Over The Last Five Years
It is a pleasure to report that the Daelim B&Co Co.,Ltd. (KRX:005750) is up 30% in the last quarter. But over the last half decade, the stock has not performed well. In fact, the share price is down 50%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
In the last half decade Daelim B&CoLtd saw its share price fall as its EPS declined below zero. At present it's hard to make valid comparisons between EPS and the share price. But we would generally expect a lower price, given the situation.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Daelim B&CoLtd, it has a TSR of -44% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Daelim B&CoLtd has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 48% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 8% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
