Further Upside For Sigong Tech Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:020710) Shares Could Introduce Price Risks After 25% Bounce
Sigong Tech Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:020710) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 25% gain and recovering from prior weakness. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 7.5% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Sigong Tech may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 4.3x, since almost half of all companies in Korea have P/E ratios greater than 12x and even P/E's higher than 23x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
Sigong Tech certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Sigong Tech?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Sigong Tech's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 114%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 600% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 33% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it odd that Sigong Tech is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Bottom Line On Sigong Tech's P/E
Shares in Sigong Tech are going to need a lot more upward momentum to get the company's P/E out of its slump. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Sigong Tech revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
