CHASYS Co., Ltd. (KRX:033250) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 25% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough

CHASYS Co., Ltd. (KRX:033250) shares have retraced a considerable 25% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 20% in that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, given about half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may still consider CHASYS as a highly attractive investment with its 5.7x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.

The earnings growth achieved at CHASYS over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this respectable earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like CHASYS' to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 8.4%. However, due to its less than impressive performance prior to this period, EPS growth is practically non-existent over the last three years overall. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 29% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we can see why CHASYS is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

CHASYS' P/E looks about as weak as its stock price lately. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of CHASYS revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
