Samsung Climate Control Co., Ltd.'s (KRX:006660) Share Price Boosted 35% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Despite an already strong run, Samsung Climate Control Co., Ltd. (KRX:006660) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 35% in the last thirty days. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 4.5% isn't as impressive.
Even after such a large jump in price, Samsung Climate Control's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.2x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 13x and even P/E's above 27x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Samsung Climate Control over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Samsung Climate Control's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 67%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 105% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 33% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that Samsung Climate Control's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Key Takeaway
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Samsung Climate Control's P/E close to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Samsung Climate Control maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
