Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. Unfortunately the Tobu Railway Co., Ltd. (TSE:9001) share price slid 32% over twelve months. That's disappointing when you consider the market returned 24%. Longer term shareholders haven't suffered as badly, since the stock is down a comparatively less painful 5.9% in three years. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 28% in the last three months. We note that the company has reported results fairly recently; and the market is hardly delighted. You can check out the latest numbers in our company report.

Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the unfortunate twelve months during which the Tobu Railway share price fell, it actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 66%. Of course, the situation might betray previous over-optimism about growth.

It's surprising to see the share price fall so much, despite the improved EPS. So it's well worth checking out some other metrics, too.

Given the yield is quite low, at 1.9%, we doubt the dividend can shed much light on the share price. Tobu Railway's revenue is actually up 3.5% over the last year. Since we can't easily explain the share price movement based on these metrics, it might be worth considering how market sentiment has changed towards the stock.

A Different Perspective

Tobu Railway shareholders are down 31% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 24%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 2% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Tobu Railway better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Tobu Railway (of which 2 don't sit too well with us!) you should know about.
