A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From Accrete Inc.'s (TSE:4395) 44% Share Price Climb
Accrete Inc. (TSE:4395) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 44% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 25% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, it would still be understandable if you think Accrete is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.7x, considering almost half the companies in Japan's Wireless Telecom industry have P/S ratios above 1.8x. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Accrete Performed Recently?
Accrete has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think this respectable revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on Accrete will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for Accrete, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Accrete's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 11% gain to the company's revenues. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 117% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 3.3%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring
With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Accrete's P/S isn't as high compared to that of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Accrete's P/S?
Accrete's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We're very surprised to see Accrete currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Accrete (at least 1 which is potentially serious), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
