Citizen Watch (TSE:7762) Is Increasing Its Dividend To ¥23.50
The board of Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. (TSE:7762) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥23.50 on the 5th of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the annual payment to 5.5% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.
Citizen Watch's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Citizen Watch's earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to fall by 5.5% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could be 55%, which we are pretty comfortable with and we think is feasible on an earnings basis.

Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥16.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥47.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 11% over that duration. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Citizen Watch has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 55% per annum. The company doesn't have any problems growing, despite returning a lot of capital to shareholders, which is a very nice combination for a dividend stock to have.
Citizen Watch Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Citizen Watch is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The earnings easily cover the company's distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. If earnings do fall over the next 12 months, the dividend could be buffeted a little bit, but we don't think it should cause too much of a problem in the long term. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
