Taiyo Yuden (TSE:6976) Has Affirmed Its Dividend Of ¥45.00
The board of Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. (TSE:6976) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 2nd of December, with investors receiving ¥45.00 per share. The dividend yield will be 3.5% based on this payment which is still above the industry average.
Estimates Indicate Taiyo Yuden's Could Struggle to Maintain Dividend Payments In The Future
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, earnings were actually smaller than the dividend, and the company was actually spending more cash than it was making. Paying out such a large dividend compared to earnings while also not generating free cash flows is a major warning sign for the sustainability of the dividend as these levels are certainly a bit high.
The next 12 months is set to see EPS grow by 34.5%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could get very high, which probably can't continue without starting to put some pressure on the balance sheet.

Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥10.00 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥90.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 25% per annum over that time. Taiyo Yuden has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Earnings per share has been sinking by 33% over the last five years. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
We're Not Big Fans Of Taiyo Yuden's Dividend
Overall, this isn't a great candidate as an income investment, even though the dividend was stable this year. The company isn't making enough to be paying as much as it is, and the other factors don't look particularly promising either. Considering all of these factors, we wouldn't rely on this dividend if we wanted to live on the income.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
