CMK (TSE:6958) Is Increasing Its Dividend To ¥20.00
CMK Corporation (TSE:6958) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 27th of June to ¥20.00. This takes the dividend yield to 3.4%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

CMK's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, CMK's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to fall by 18.0% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 29%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥5.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥15.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 12% a year over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. CMK has impressed us by growing EPS at 37% per year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
Our Thoughts On CMK's Dividend
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think CMK's payments are rock solid. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think CMK is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
