Are Robust Financials Driving The Recent Rally In HORIBA, Ltd.'s (TSE:6856) Stock?
HORIBA (TSE:6856) has had a great run on the share market with its stock up by a significant 37% over the last three months. Given the company's impressive performance, we decided to study its financial indicators more closely as a company's financial health over the long-term usually dictates market outcomes. In this article, we decided to focus on HORIBA's ROE.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.
How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for HORIBA is:
11% = JP¥35b ÷ JP¥306b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. So, this means that for every ¥1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of ¥0.11.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
A Side By Side comparison of HORIBA's Earnings Growth And 11% ROE
To start with, HORIBA's ROE looks acceptable. Especially when compared to the industry average of 8.6% the company's ROE looks pretty impressive. Probably as a result of this, HORIBA was able to see an impressive net income growth of 21% over the last five years. However, there could also be other causes behind this growth. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.
As a next step, we compared HORIBA's net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 14%.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is 6856 fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.
Is HORIBA Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
HORIBA's three-year median payout ratio is a pretty moderate 30%, meaning the company retains 70% of its income. By the looks of it, the dividend is well covered and HORIBA is reinvesting its profits efficiently as evidenced by its exceptional growth which we discussed above.
Additionally, HORIBA has paid dividends over a period of at least ten years which means that the company is pretty serious about sharing its profits with shareholders.
Summary
In total, we are pretty happy with HORIBA's performance. Specifically, we like that the company is reinvesting a huge chunk of its profits at a high rate of return. This of course has caused the company to see substantial growth in its earnings. Having said that, the company's earnings growth is expected to slow down, as forecasted in the current analyst estimates.
