Some Investors May Be Willing To Look Past Icom's (TSE:6820) Soft Earnings
Icom Incorporated's (TSE:6820) earnings announcement last week didn't impress shareholders. Despite the soft profit numbers, our analysis has optimistic about the overall quality of the income statement.
The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Importantly, our data indicates that Icom's profit was reduced by JP¥386m, due to unusual items, over the last year. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And that's hardly a surprise given these line items are considered unusual. If Icom doesn't see those unusual expenses repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to increase over the coming year.

Our Take On Icom's Profit Performance
Unusual items (expenses) detracted from Icom's earnings over the last year, but we might see an improvement next year. Based on this observation, we consider it likely that Icom's statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! And the EPS is up 38% annually, over the last three years. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Icom at this point in time. While conducting our analysis, we found that Icom has 1 warning sign and it would be unwise to ignore this.
Today we've zoomed in on a single data point to better understand the nature of Icom's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
