Benign Growth For santec Holdings Corporation (TSE:6777) Underpins Stock's 34% Plummet
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the santec Holdings Corporation (TSE:6777) share price has dived 34% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 31% share price drop.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, santec Holdings may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.4x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios greater than 13x and even P/E's higher than 19x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Recent times have been advantageous for santec Holdings as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is santec Holdings' Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as santec Holdings' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 65% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 414% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 6.6% as estimated by the one analyst watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 10%.
With this information, we are not surprised that santec Holdings is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
The softening of santec Holdings' shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of santec Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
