Is It Smart To Buy Nextgen,Inc. (TSE:3842) Before It Goes Ex-Dividend?

Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Nextgen,Inc. (TSE:3842) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next four days. Typically, the ex-dividend date is two business days before the record date, which is the date on which a company determines the shareholders eligible to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important because any transaction on a stock needs to have been settled before the record date in order to be eligible for a dividend. Therefore, if you purchase NextgenInc's shares on or after the 29th of September, you won't be eligible to receive the dividend, when it is paid on the 3rd of December.

The company's next dividend payment will be JP¥15.00 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of JP¥20.00 to shareholders. Last year's total dividend payments show that NextgenInc has a trailing yield of 1.7% on the current share price of JP¥1144.00. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.

Dividends are typically paid out of company income, so if a company pays out more than it earned, its dividend is usually at a higher risk of being cut. NextgenInc has a low and conservative payout ratio of just 10.0% of its income after tax. That said, even highly profitable companies sometimes might not generate enough cash to pay the dividend, which is why we should always check if the dividend is covered by cash flow. The good news is it paid out just 5.1% of its free cash flow in the last year.

It's encouraging to see that the dividend is covered by both profit and cash flow. This generally suggests the dividend is sustainable, as long as earnings don't drop precipitously.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Businesses with strong growth prospects usually make the best dividend payers, because it's easier to grow dividends when earnings per share are improving. If business enters a downturn and the dividend is cut, the company could see its value fall precipitously. It's encouraging to see NextgenInc has grown its earnings rapidly, up 46% a year for the past five years. With earnings per share growing rapidly and the company sensibly reinvesting almost all of its profits within the business, NextgenInc looks like a promising growth company.

Many investors will assess a company's dividend performance by evaluating how much the dividend payments have changed over time. NextgenInc has delivered an average of 31% per year annual increase in its dividend, based on the past seven years of dividend payments. It's exciting to see that both earnings and dividends per share have grown rapidly over the past few years.

The Bottom Line

Is NextgenInc an attractive dividend stock, or better left on the shelf? It's great that NextgenInc is growing earnings per share while simultaneously paying out a low percentage of both its earnings and cash flow. It's disappointing to see the dividend has been cut at least once in the past, but as things stand now, the low payout ratio suggests a conservative approach to dividends, which we like. There's a lot to like about NextgenInc, and we would prioritise taking a closer look at it.

With that in mind, a critical part of thorough stock research is being aware of any risks that stock currently faces. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for NextgenInc you should know about.
