Goodpatch, Inc.'s (TSE:7351) Share Price Is Still Matching Investor Opinion Despite 32% Slump
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Goodpatch, Inc. (TSE:7351) share price has dived 32% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 68% share price decline.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, Goodpatch's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 67.1x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Japan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Goodpatch certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For Goodpatch?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Goodpatch's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 27% gain to the company's bottom line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 89% drop in EPS in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 128% per annum during the coming three years according to the only analyst following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 9.6% each year growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we can see why Goodpatch is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From Goodpatch's P/E?
Even after such a strong price drop, Goodpatch's P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Goodpatch's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
