Howtelevision's (TSE:7064) Earnings Seem To Be Promising
The stock was sluggish on the back of Howtelevision, Inc.'s (TSE:7064) recent earnings report. Along with the solid headline numbers, we think that investors have some reasons for optimism.
Examining Cashflow Against Howtelevision's Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
For the year to July 2025, Howtelevision had an accrual ratio of -1.59. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. In fact, it had free cash flow of JP¥347m in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of JP¥234.0m. As it happens we don't have the data on what Howtelevision produced by way of free cashflow, the year before, which is a pity.

Our Take On Howtelevision's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, Howtelevision's accrual ratio indicates strong conversion of profit to free cash flow, which is a positive for the company. Based on this observation, we consider it possible that Howtelevision's statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
