Even With A 28% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Access Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:4813) Performance Completely
Access Co., Ltd. (TSE:4813) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 28% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 37%.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Access' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.4x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Japan's Software industry is similar at about 2x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Access Has Been Performing
Revenue has risen firmly for Access recently, which is pleasing to see. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to only keep up with the broader industry, which has keeping the P/S in line with expectations. Those who are bullish on Access will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Access' is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 22%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 114% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 12% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this information, we find it interesting that Access is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.
What Does Access' P/S Mean For Investors?
Access' stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We didn't quite envision Access' P/S sitting in line with the wider industry, considering the revenue growth over the last three-year is higher than the current industry outlook. There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching this positive performance. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
