We Think That There Are More Issues For gooddays holdings (TSE:4437) Than Just Sluggish Earnings
Last week's earnings announcement from gooddays holdings, Inc. (TSE:4437) was disappointing to investors, with a sluggish profit figure. Our analysis has found some reasons to be concerned, beyond the weak headline numbers.
Zooming In On gooddays holdings' Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
gooddays holdings has an accrual ratio of 0.53 for the year to September 2025. Statistically speaking, that's a real negative for future earnings. And indeed, during the period the company didn't produce any free cash flow whatsoever. Even though it reported a profit of JP¥303.0m, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through JP¥1.4b in the last year. Coming off the back of negative free cash flow last year, we imagine some shareholders might wonder if its cash burn of JP¥1.4b, this year, indicates high risk.

Our Take On gooddays holdings' Profit Performance
As we have made quite clear, we're a bit worried that gooddays holdings didn't back up the last year's profit with free cashflow. For this reason, we think that gooddays holdings' statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. Sadly, its EPS was down over the last twelve months. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors.
