The board of Keyware Solutions Inc. (TSE:3799) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥25.00 on the 11th of June, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Keyware Solutions' Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. However, Keyware Solutions' earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 10.8% over the next 12 months. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 28% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥10.00 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥25.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 9.6% a year over that time. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. Keyware Solutions might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Keyware Solutions has impressed us by growing EPS at 11% per year over the past five years. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for Keyware Solutions' prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.

We Really Like Keyware Solutions' Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Keyware Solutions is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance.
