Not Many Are Piling Into Aplix Corporation (TSE:3727) Stock Yet As It Plummets 37%

The Aplix Corporation (TSE:3727) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 37%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 39% share price drop.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Aplix's P/E ratio of 11.5x, since the median price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio in Japan is also close to 13x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/E.

As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Aplix over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing earnings performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Aplix would need to produce growth that's similar to the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 22%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 227% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 9.8% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

In light of this, it's curious that Aplix's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Aplix's P/E

Following Aplix's share price tumble, its P/E is now hanging on to the median market P/E. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Aplix revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.

Having said that, be aware Aplix is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant.
