Scroll's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Scroll's earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 35.5% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 32% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥10.00 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥42.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 15% per annum over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Scroll has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 35% per annum. Scroll is clearly able to grow rapidly while still returning cash to shareholders, positioning it to become a strong dividend payer in the future.
We Really Like Scroll's Dividend
Overall, we think that Scroll could be a great option for a dividend investment, although we would have preferred if the dividend wasn't cut this year. By reducing the dividend, pressure will be taken off the balance sheet, which could help the dividend to be consistent in the future. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
